In an Effort to Offend Everyone!

One of the many themes in the recent St. Louis Jewish Light’s excellent piece on Charles Lindbergh was antisemitism, especially in the first half of the 20th century. Here is a link:

The ADL and others report that Jew hatred is rising again.  I’m not so sure I agree.  I do agree that “we” are a separate subgroup of Americans, whether we are Jewish ” black hats” or just “Bagel-and-Lox Jews” like me.

Some people don’t like us just like some people don’t like Catholics, Italians, Irish, Black people, Indians, and Arabs as well as recent immigrants.  Books have been written on antisemitism, but the answer to me is simple.  I know this answer will offend just about everyone whom I haven’t offended already in my life.

Jews are asa s whole better in the sciences, professions and in businesses than other groups.

The theme of Jewish doctors is prevalent in American culture.  Jews have won Nobel Prizes far exceeding their numbers.  Archie Bunker was famous for hiring a “Jew Lawyer.”
As far as business goes and our ability to use money, the one glaring example is in pro sports.  Specifically, the National Football League.  As of a few months ago there were six Jewish players and fifteen Jewish owners.  Certainly, it confirms that we are rather good with money.  There are reasons for such skills, which have been passed on through generations, but the average reader probably knows them. That’s not to say that every Jew has these traits or skills. Everyone should be judged on his or her own. Similarly African Americans are disproportionately good in certain sports such as basketball.  That doesn’t mean one should assume that every person of color is such!

Some people look up to us, but some despise us each for our sucess. In Israel Jews have built a fantastically successful society not only by their hard work but through the contributions of the diaspora.

On the other hand, we Jews seem to be disproportionally involved in some nasty things, which I need not mention here. What’s the answer? to paraphrase one of the most well-known Jews, Larry David:  “We need to be more like Einstein than Weinstein.”
