Rural Rubes#2

I got some negative feedback on my post by e-mail and wanted to respond.

I understand why people of any religion who believe that an all-knowing being created humankind would oppose abortion.  It makes sense.  While I am Jewish, I don’t believe the foundation myths of the Torah/Bible.  If people oppose abortion, they should not have one.

The point of that post was that the majority of Missourians are being dictated to by the minority in a rural-dominated legislature.

I thought of this when I saw a story in today’s paper about the rural city of Foristell, located about 50 minutes from my house.  It’s growing.  The residents have successfully pushed the legislature to fund the widening of Interstate 70, which goes from St. Louis to Kansas City, Missouri, to three lanes.  It’s a good idea.  However, the outstate people don’t want to pay for it. Their legislature banned making it a toll road and limited any rise in the gas tax, meaning it’s being paid for in general by the taxpayers of the wealthier areas.  This, when the main users are interstate and local truckers and rural people.  A compromise might have given local people who commute a discount because all toll roads without booths are managed electronically, but the people who are for smaller government just don’t want to pay their fair share.
